State of the NSSGC

A Special Message to All Members:

Let me start by thanking all of you, our members, for your loyalty to the club.  If you were able to attend the annual banquet you have already heard what I am about to say so this letter is to inform everyone who was unable to attend where we currently stand as a club.

If you have read any of my monthly newsletters over the last year you know that our membership number is severely down, participation at our tournaments varies from month to month but rarely exceeds 30 players, and in spite of numerous requests only a very few of you have stepped up and offered your services as a member of our Board of Governors.  At one time we were over 400 strong and we often had waiting lists to play in our events.  In fact, the club was so popular we paid one individual a monthly fee to act as our Executive Director.  Sadly, over the years, as members have grown older, moved out of state, passed away, or become ill and unable to continue to play this wonderful game we call golf, our numbers have continued to decline.  Last year we offered free membership as a way of enticing some new blood into our group.  108 individuals took us up on our offer but of that number, only about 40 actually participated in any given month.  This year we currently stand at 55 members, of which only about half are participating.  The general consensus seems to be that time has finally passed us by, and while the initial purpose of the club, which was to encourage friendly meetings and golf tournaments for senior golfers residing in the State of Nevada and surrounding states is still relevant today, the number of alternatives that are now available, the rising cost of golf, the aging of our population and the increasing amount of time it takes to play 18 holes of golf in a tournament format has made attracting new members nearly impossible.

In discussing this issue I have spoken to every living past President of the club and of course, the current Board of Governors.  At our Board meeting which was held just prior to the banquet a decision was made to begin the process of dissolving the club at the end of this year in accordance with our by-laws, which require all funds, assets and property of the club to be donated to a golf oriented non-profit organization(s).  We have begun to put together a list of possible organizations and I will be speaking with the leaders of the SNGA in regard to such organizations.  I will also be asking the SNGA if they will accept our revolving plaques which are a history of our club champions since the time the club was founded.

At our meeting the Board also decided to do the following for our current members.  Beginning with our July tournament and continuing for each remaining tournament until the end of the year members will only be charged for the greens fee portion of each event.  The club will contribute all of the prize money and the Board has unanimously voted to increase that amount to $30 per player from the previous $20.  At our final tournament in December we will have a holiday/end of an era luncheon which will be fully paid for by the club.  [Note: If you have already submitted payment for the July tournament you will be rebated $20].  I want you to know that the Board has also voted to immediately suspend the acceptance of any new memberships for the rest of the year.

Lastly, I want to say a couple of things about our Board.  It has been my honor and pleasure to be your club President over the last four years.  It has truly been a labor of love, as it has for all of the Board members who have worked extremely hard to keep the club going.  I want to once again thank Mike Landry for all that he has done.  Mike is no longer a Board member but he will continue to handle the emails and our website until the end of the year.  Current Board member and former Executive Director Terry Kirk has worked overtime in his efforts to keep the club going.  Our new Vice-President and former Membership Chairman Lucius Ware is always there when I need him.  Our Treasurer, Bill Smith, deserves a great deal of credit for putting in considerable time to make sure our financial records are in order and we meet all State and Federal standards as a non-profit.  Our current Executive Director Jack Schwartz has stepped up to put our tournaments together and run them efficiently and he does not get enough credit for the time he puts in.  Special thanks also to our new Secretary, Greg Jarrett, to our Rules Official Lee Stickney and to Board member Vince Krack.  And welcome to Bob Lujano and Claud Smith who have agreed to become Board members for the rest of this year.

I will close with this.  After the banquet several members asked me if the decision by the Board to dissolve the club is final.  My best answer is that it is never over until it is over, but at this point it is going to take a large miracle for us to see a 46th year.

Thank you to one and all.
